Matsumoto is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Japan Alps and the rivers which have their source in mountains. It is located almost in the center of Japan. Currently, the city population is about 240,000 and it is the biggest city in population next to prefectural capital, Nagano City.


Because of inland climate, even a cold winter day with 10 degrees Celsius below zero in the morning, temperature will go up to 5 degrees Celsius above zero in the noon. There is huge temperature difference through dawn to dusk. On the contrary, in the summer temperature goes more than 35 degrees Celsius in a daytime but it will go down more than 10 degrees Celsius in the evening. It makes you feel relatively comfortable.


Matsumoto has many tourism resources represented by the national treasure Matsumoto Castle, former Kaichi school, Kamikochi, Utsukushigahara highland. They are attracting tourists from all over the world.”Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto” is held every October. A lot of fans are visiting the city especially during this one month.


Matsumoto City set its goal, as a model city of the future, to become “The Sustainable Healthy City, Matsumoto” under Matsumoto City’s Comprehensive Plan (entitled the Ninth Basic Plan of the 2020 Fundamental Vision).


Placing health as the central component, we will work in an integrated manner with people in various fields to achieve six areas of health: living, community, environment, economy, education and culture. Here, health is defined as maintaining a good condition.
